Battle

Battle 1 Recap

Something to consider for next Battle: Remember to take your best guess if you do not know an answer. Since there is no penalty for a wrong answer, a guess is better than bringing up a blank sheet of paper, and who knows, your team might get lucky!

There were a few challenges to questions. These challenges will be reviewed, and the decisions announced at the beginning of Battle 2. If points are to be awarded from the challenges, those points will be added to Battle 2's scores.

We look forward to seeing everyone next week. Remember, next Wednesday during Battle is the first time you can return your order slips to purchase books for the guest author to sign during the Battle Awards Ceremony.

Practice Battle Recap

Congratulations goes out to all the teams for their efforts during Practice Battle. The scores from the Practice Battle do not count towards the running total that determines the overall winner of Battle of the Books; however, we hope the experience of playing in the Practice Battle helps clear up some of the confusion about what will be expected for the official Battles.

As a reminder, all Battle participants should be in their teams' squares by 4pm if they are to play in round 1. If you are late, you may not join your team during round 1. However, take a seat on the sidelines as players may be added or switched out before rounds 2 and 3. In addition, a lot of warnings were issued during Practice Battle. Be cautious of talking between questions in order to avoid the possibility of losing points. Unsportsmanlike conduct can also result in warnings and/or deduction of points, so please no grandstanding or heckling.

Now for the results of everyone's hardwork! Please note: this does not reflect the results of the challenge made during the Speed Round. The results of that challenge will be discussed before the next Battle.

See everyone back on Wednesday for Battle 1!

Final Scores for the 2017-2018 Battle Season

Congratulations to all the participants of this year's Battle Season. Quite a few teams rallied in Battle 5, putting out impressive scores. However, it is the teams with the highest overall score that have made it to the top of the leader board.

St. Monica Blue has taken first place. St. Monica White follows in second place. Third place goes to St. Eugene.

We look forward to seeing all the participants at the Award Ceremony on March 21st at 4:00pm, where the author, Michele Weber Hurwitz, will be speaking and answering questions. We will follow with an author signing and pizza. See you there!

One More Chance for Review

Before the first Battle, where scores will count, see if you can complete this crossword puzzle. The goal is to come up with the characters' names.

Hints:

  1. Click on the first tile in a title to start typing.
  2. If you typed a name correctly, the tiles will change into a pinkish/peachy color.
  3. The "A"s at the top will control the font size.
  4. The window image will make the puzzle full screen.
  5. The key image will provide the solution for the entire puzzle.
  6. Knowing the characters is the start of a great review. But, the next question you need to ask yourself, is why are these characters important to the story.
  7. Have fun!

Practice Battle Recap

Practice Battle Scores: Giles-22; Pennoyer-21; St Eugene-20; Leigh-20; St Monica Blue-16; St Monica WHite-16; Union Ridge-15

Congratulations to the teams for an excellent practice round!

Giles took first place with Pennoyer in second. St. Eugene and Leigh ended up in a tie for third place.  Now, a word of caution: two of the teams in these upper ranks had warning eggs. If that warning had become a negative point, they would have lost their placement. Be aware of your teams' vocal volume and behavior. You do not want to lose your ranking for something that can be easily avoided.

Battle 1 will officially start next week. The scores from Practice Battle do not carry over, so this is a perfect opportunity to start fresh, as all teams will be even again. Remember, each book will covered in every battle, so make sure all books have been read and the experts are in the team square by 4:00pm.

If there are any questions on the rules of Battle of the Books or to declare a food allergy, please contact Kids World.

Good luck to all the school teams!

Battle Books Review

See if you can figure out which Battle Books these sets of characters come from.

Hints:

  1. If the book title begins with the word "The," skip over to the next word. For example, The Giver would simply be Giver.
  2. There are no spaces between words in the cross search. For example, The Secret Hum of a Daisy would be SecretHumOfADaisy.
  3. Click on the first tile in a title to start typing.
  4. If you typed a title correctly, the tiles will change into a pinkish/peachy color.
  5. The "A"s at the top will control the font size.
  6. The window image will make the puzzle full screen.
  7. The key image will provide the solution for the entire puzzle.
  8. Knowing which characters come from which book is the start of a great review. But, the next question you need to ask yourself, is why are these characters important to the story.
