Reference Help
| The reference desk is staffed by librarians who help answer all kinds of questions. Need homework information? The CEO of a business? The value of your 1986 Ford Tempo? The best way to put up drywall? We'll give you a hand with these and hundreds of other questions, too. We also offer special sources, like college catalogs for Illinois, cd-rom products such as Info-Trac, Chicago Tribune and Phone Disc for phone numbers throughout the country.
The Internet is available to use in the Library. Please click here to view our policy and internet user agreement. Please feel free to use all our services. |
Programs
| We offer programs for all ages all year long. Examples of past programs are bus trips to Garfield Park Conservatory and Lincoln Park Zoo; Basic Internet Classes; workshops; and drawing comic book characters. Some programs have small fees, and most require advanced registration. To keep up to date on our current offerings, click on the Calendar of Events. |
Children's Programs
| Let your kids meet and play with some new friends and encourage reading, too. One hour story sessions for ages 3 - 8 are offered weekly by the children's librarian. A half-hour lapsit session is available for ages 2 - 3. The checkout desk will have the schedules and sign-up sheets. More information. |
Adult Book Discussion Group
| If Oprah's still dictating your book choices, let us help you move in some new directions. The group meets on the first Monday and Tuesday of each month. The Monday session is held from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and the Tuesday session is from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. in the meeting room. We read a mix of contemporary and older classics as well as some biography and non-fiction. More information. |
Meeting Room
| Local civic, educational, or cultural groups may reserve the meeting rooms in advance for non-profit activities. The meeting rooms will hold 100 people. Please call in advance for availability. |
Foreign Language Materials
| Books and videos in Polish for adults and children are available for checkout, and we can order materials in other foreign languages from other libraries in the Metropolitan Library System. Ask the reference librarian for information. |
Blind and Physically Handicapped Services
| Through the Government Assisted Program, materials are available in a variety of formats for those who have disabilities. Call us if you're interested and think you qualify. |
Homebound Services
| Unable to use the library in the traditional way? See what we offer. More information |
Tours
| If you're still having trouble finding the goldfish books or you can never get to the travel videos on Hawaii, or need instruction on how to use SWAN, we offer group library tours. We'll walk you through, show you where everything is and answer your questions. Please call Reference to set up a time. |
Outreach to Schools
| Both the Children's and Community Services librarians will be glad to come to your school to do booktalks, or, for younger students, to read stories. Please call Reference to schedule a date.
Battle of the Books competitions run each year in January/February for children grades four through six. Schools which participated in the 2007 competition from Norridge and Harwood Heights were Union Ridge, Pennoyer, Giles and Leigh and St. Eugene. More Information. |
