Battle of the Books

March 18th,
4:00pm to 5:00pm
Battle of the Books challenges students in grades four through six to become familiar with literature. Comprehension and retention are put to the test in a Jeopardy style battle between the teams.

Area schools create their own teams and gather at the library to compete in a five-week battle on questions derived from selected books. See your school's Battle Coach to sign up.

Bring Your Own Book Club

Come to the book club with no required reading! Bring a book or two (any length, any genre) to discuss with fellow readers and librarians. Enjoy a snack and get ideas for your to-be-read list.

Anonymous Teen Writers

Writers in grades 7 - 12 are invited to join in on a weekly hour and a half of socializing, discussion, and, of course, writing! Share your poems and stories in a supportive space or listen to others read.

Kids Write Away Redux

Want to become the next famous author? Join us for one or all three classes this spring! The themes for each class are, "Comics Away," "Let's Write a Song," and "How Long Can You Write?"

Bus Trip: Eris Brewery and Cider House

March 20th,
10:00am to 2:30pm
$25.00 - As the story goes, Eris, the Greek goddess of Chaos (upset at not being invited) threw her Golden Apple into a party, creating a scene as every goddess in attendance vied to prove herself worthy of the apple's inscription, "For the fairest of them all." Inspired by the legend, ERIS Brewery and Cider House threw their own apple into Chicago's brewery scene by specializing in hard apple ciders. Our tour of ERIS will will explore the brewery's backstory, its building - a one-time Masonic Temple, and its brewing methods. Bring money for lunch after the tour.

Family Knitting

Grades 4-6. Registration Required

Join us for a beginners knitting class just for Families! Each week will build on different knitting skills to complete a simple project. Registration is for all four days. Class size is limited. This is a Workshop program and waivers must be completed in order to complete registration.

Look for the Friends of the Library in the Book Sale Room on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month to support the library and find great deals.

Chicago Arabic Music Ensemble

The Chicago Arabic Music Ensemble is a classical Arabic group. Their five performers explore the instruments, musical forms, and cultural traditions of the Arabic world, a genre very different from that of belly dance. This is classical Arabic music, the purest incarnation of the tradition, performed by experts who can explain the music and explore the many peoples who play it.
