It's a Secret

Maire Crawford

The other day I met an old friend
Who greeted me with arms wide open,
And said,
"Psst! It's a secret what I have to tell
So you cannot pass it on."

Why if it was such a secret was she so willing to tell?
On and on she gabbed of this and that
So, I wondered what was this
That I must not tell.

If she had been given this in trust,
Why was she so willing to pass it on?

To me a secret is a secret, a trust between two friends,
And should not be revealed.
If the giver wanted all to know,
She herself would pass it on.

A secret is a trust between two friends,
And should not be casual gossip.
For as it is passed on
It is added to and added to
Until it is no longer a trust
Between two friends.

The Locket

David Rumer

Sorting her jewelry; good and best
One piece stood out from the rest
The locket didn't seem to fit
As other pieces outshined it

Then it was clear why she
Had stored the thing so prominently
He remembered where the case came from:
His gift to her at the senior prom

Where he first told her, "I love you"
And, as they danced it seemed they knew
It did not even need be said
That some fine day they would be wed

He carefully opened the locket wide
Displaying reminiscences inside
Reminders of the different ways
They spent so many happy days

The honeymoon so far from home
The Senate House and Capitol Dome
Sights seen after a very long ride
Traveling blissfully side by side

The little house where Billy was born
At dawn on a cold winter morn
Boy to man, now, with kids of his own
All settled down, his wild oats sown

A long life of happiness and tears
The hand of fate counting down the years
They slowed their pace as they grew grey
Until she peaceably passed away

He closed the locket and put it away
To be with her, soon, another day.
